Your marketing SMSs will give you a better return if you create and curate your audience properly. You can use lists to easily segment and target your customers with the most relevant messaging to improve your campaign results.

Defining your goal

The first step to creating the best audience is deciding on your objective for those contacts. These objectives can be general or business specific but most importantly should be useful to you.

Some examples of objectives:

  • Awareness: monthly newsletter

  • Consideration: vouchers or discounts

  • Conversion: CTA (call-to-action) to your website

Creating and segmenting your audience

To create your audience, you need to first upload your contacts. Once you have done so, you can start defining your audiences by sorting them into lists. Lists allow you to easily communicate with a group of your customers by selecting one or many contact segments as your audience. Learn how to best use lists in Creating lists and assigning contacts.

When segmenting your customers, use criteria that will best define the type of campaign you send.

Some useful segmentation criteria include:

  • Location

  • DOB

  • Source

Audience selection

Once you have created your audience lists, you can use these audiences by selecting them in the Audience step of your campaign creation. You have the flexibility to not only choose who you want to send your message to but also exclude specific contacts from receiving it. This is where exclusion lists come in.

Using exclusion lists

Exclusion lists allow you to refine your targeting by ensuring certain contacts don’t receive specific campaigns. For example, you might want to exclude people who have already made a purchase from a particular promotion, or customers who are not eligible for a specific offer.

To do this, simply select the lists you want to send to and then use the Do not send to field to input the exclusion lists. These are lists of contacts that you specifically want to leave out of the campaign. This added control helps you avoid sending irrelevant messages and improves the effectiveness of your campaign.

Top tip: If you have multiple lists and you’re not seeing the ones you need, there’s a search function to help you quickly find and select the appropriate lists.

Did you know? We’ve built in a helpful feature to prevent double sends. Meaning, if a contact exists in more than one list that is selected, the contact will only receive the campaign once.
